Party Tips

Planning a bar for a party is not as difficult as it may seem. What is needed is organization, planning and most of all, common sense. Nothing is impossible once you learn how to be flexible and to adapt to certain variables depending on the nature of your party, the number of guests, budget and time.

By following this simple guide, you will be able to spend more time with your guests and less time worrying.

Budget Determine the type of your affair and list your needs within your financial budget. These include not only wine and spirits, but also food, invitations, candles, flowers, ice, music, staffing and whatever else you need to create just the right setting.
Nature of Affair An afternoon picnic and a sit-down party will have different needs. Therefore, it is important to remember that the season, time of day and nature of the function can dramatically affect consumption.
Instructions Prepare a checklist for yourself or any staff that you have hired. It should include cocktail and dinner hours and which wines to serve with each course. If table service of wine is planned, list which wines with each course. Also avoid "jug" wines. Premium wines - 750 ML - bottles make a much better presentation.
Bottle Sizes When buying for larger parties or catered affairs, it is better to purchase the liter size rather than 1.75 liter. The reasons for this are: less spillage, easier handling, less quanitity in opened bottles. Any opened bottles become additions to your home bar. Therefore, while it is cheaper to purchase 1.75 liter sizes, consumption must be considered. An exception would be if there is an item that you regularly stock in your home bar. In that case, go for the larger economical size.
Specialty
Drinks
Be sure to consider any "specialty" items you may need for different types of drinks, for example: Pina Coladas, Irish Coffee, Mimosas and Cordials. Also, consider if you would like two levels of categories like scotch or vodka (one for mixing and one poured straight). You will, in these cases, require additional items than what our calculator suggests.
Know Your
Guests
Use our calculator as your guideline. You know your guests' personal tastes and you may wish to modify our suggestions. For example: extra vodka or champagne, little or no beer, a special bottle of Single Malt Scotch for your brother-in-law, etc.
Consider Season, time of day and nature of party (toast, cocktail party, sit-down dinner) can dramatically effect consumption.
